How Bookkeeper uses AI.

Plain-English transparency on which features in Earling Labs Bookkeeper use AI, what kind of AI powers them, and what that means for you and your taxes. We believe in over-disclosing rather than under-disclosing on AI.

The short version

Earling Labs Bookkeeper uses AI to sort your transactions into bookkeeping categories for you to review. The categorization is powered by Claude, an AI assistant developed by Anthropic, a U.S.-based AI safety company. When the AI categorizes a transaction or answers a help question, that data is processed through Anthropic's API.

AI does the tedious sorting. The final say on every category, and every number on your tax return, is yours. Bookkeeper does not file your taxes, give tax advice, or move any money.

Critical · Read this first

AI categorization can be wrong. It may mis-sort a transaction, mislabel something as deductible, or miss context only you know. Always review your books before filing taxes or making financial decisions, and run them by a qualified tax professional. Bookkeeper organizes; you and your accountant decide.

What Bookkeeper uses AI for

What Bookkeeper does NOT do

About Claude (Anthropic)

Claude is an AI assistant developed by Anthropic, a U.S.-based AI safety company. We license Claude through Anthropic's commercial API like any other developer, and we are not affiliated with Anthropic beyond being one of their many API customers. The transaction categorization and the help assistant in Bookkeeper are powered by Claude.

What this means for you

Always review before you file

Every category the AI assigns is a suggestion. You can change any category, mark a transaction deductible or not, and add notes. Review your books before relying on them — for a loan, a tax return, or any decision that matters.

Bank connections are read-only

When bank sync is available, Bookkeeper connects to your business bank through Plaid, a regulated financial-data provider, to read transactions. It cannot move money. You can disconnect a bank at any time on the Banks page.

Your data

To provide AI features, transaction details (the merchant name, amount, and the bank's category hint) may be sent to Anthropic's API for categorization. We do not sell your data. We never store bank account or routing numbers, and Bookkeeper holds no homeowner/customer personal information. For Anthropic's own policies, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

Improving our AI over time

To make categorization more accurate, we keep a record comparing how the AI categorized a vendor to the category you ended up choosing. This record is pseudonymized (not stored under your name), stores no bank account numbers and no customer personal information — only the vendor, the amount, and the categories — and is used only to improve Earling Labs products, never sold. To opt out, email support@earlinglabs.com.

What we don't claim

We are transparent about what we built and what we license. We do not claim to have built "our own AI" for the categorization — it is powered by Anthropic's Claude. Where we build our own proprietary models, we say so specifically.
